Putting aircraft in a hangar is one thing, turning it into a museum is another...
Walking through the Stampe en Vertongen Museum is an experience. Not only do you come face to face with real aircraft, but you also learn something about Antwerp and its rich aviation history while walking; witness the airport building which, when it opened in 1930, was one of the most modern of its kind in Europe and is now the only fully operational airport building from that time.
You can also take a seat in a real jet and dream about a beautiful flight... or even better book a flight in one of our SV-4's
The history of aviation in Antwerp began in 1909 at the "Wilrijkse Plein". That was closed in 1921. In 1923, the airport opened at its current location, with three railway carriages as infrastructure.
We will walk you through a replica of the first airport building, where the evolution of aircraft designs is presented using aircraft models.
In 'den Atelier' we simulate what part of the Stampe factories could have been. You see Jean Stampe behind his desk who keeps an eye on the comings and goings of the visitors (and also the volunteers).
In the static part of the museum are a number of replicas of aircraft from the First World War, with which or against which Jean Stampe, Maurice Vertongen, Jan Olieslagers and other pioneers flew.
Most of our aircraft are in airworthy condition and participate in fly-ins.
From the period of World War II we have in the museum a North American T-6G Texan (also known as Harvard), a type that was later also used as a trainer with the Belgian Air Force.
Also flying, but not quite an airplane, is the Fieseler Fi-103 Doodlebug or better known as Hitler's V-1.
From the post-war period we have a Fouga Magister who was once part of the "Red Devils", the famous acro-team of the Belgian Air Force.
The flying part of the Stampe & Vertongen Museum consists of a large number of SV-4's that are regularly used for pleasure flights or air baptisms. They are displayed in the hangar next to the museum and are the property of private individuals. You can admire them from 'den Atelier'
